Boomerang is an I/O architecture that combines a custom real-time operating system with a legacy system such as Linux on a partitioned hardware platform. Instead of sacrificing existing drivers, libraries and services to achieve real-time behavior, Boomerang allows the two environments to work together while maintaining spatial and temporal isolation for timing-critical workloads.
At its core are composable “tuned pipes,” which create real-time task pipelines spanning the RTOS and legacy OS. These pipelines provide end-to-end guarantees for sensing, processing and actuation, with constraints on throughput, data loss and delay. Time-critical I/O can remain within the RTOS while workloads requiring existing Linux capabilities can securely cross into the legacy environment.
